The world's largest warehouse district — red brick, canals, and maritime industrial grit.
Hamburg's Speicherstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like stepping into a 19th-century trading empire. The red-brick warehouses, built on oak timber foundations over the canals, once stored coffee, tea, tobacco, and oriental carpets.
Today, the warehouses house the Miniatur Wunderland (the world's largest model railway), the Hamburg Dungeon, and increasingly, tech startups and creative agencies. The adjacent HafenCity is Europe's largest inner-city development project — a bold bet on the future.
The Elbphilharmonie concert hall, rising like a wave of glass atop a former warehouse, is the crown jewel. Even if you don't catch a concert, the public viewing platform is free and offers the best panorama of the harbor.
