The humble Spätkauf — Berlin's living room, social glue, and last bastion of affordable nightlife.
In a city of contradictions, the Späti (late shop) might be Berlin's most honest institution. These corner shops — technically convenience stores, practically community centers — are where Berlin's real social life happens.
Grab a Sternburg from the fridge for €0.80, pull up a crate outside, and you're part of the neighborhood. At any given Späti on a warm evening, you'll find students, artists, elderly Turkish men playing tavla, techno tourists pre-drinking, and families grabbing last-minute groceries.
The Späti culture is under threat. Gentrification, noise complaints, and changing regulations are slowly squeezing these institutions. Visit now, because the Berlin of 2030 won't have the same Späti scene.
