Surreal sandstone pillars rising from forested valleys — Germany's most dramatic rock formations.
Saxon Switzerland National Park, just 30 minutes from Dresden, feels like another planet. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains have been eroded over millions of years into towering pillars, deep gorges, and natural arches that defy geological logic.
The Bastei Bridge — a 76-meter-long stone bridge connecting sandstone pinnacles 194 meters above the Elbe — is the park's crown jewel. But the real adventure lies in the lesser-known trails: the Schrammsteine ridge walk, the Kuhstall (a massive natural rock arch), and the challenging ladderways of the Malerweg.
The park takes its name from 18th-century Swiss artists who compared its dramatic landscapes to their homeland. Caspar David Friedrich, the great Romantic painter, found his greatest inspiration here.
